A ticketing system holds customer PII and sits on the public internet — an unpatched osTicket is a liability, not a saving. Price that in as a fraction of a sysadmin's time and the free tier stops being free; it just moves the cost from a line item to a person.
osTicket also sells a cloud edition from $12/agent/mo, and this is the option that makes least sense. At $12/agent you have surrendered the only real advantage over the commercial market while keeping the dated interface. If you're paying per agent anyway, you should be shopping properly.
What Zendesk charges for
The Zendesk Suite starts at $55/agent/mo (Team, annual); Support-only starts at $19/agent/mo. The Suite bundles ticketing, help centre, live chat and messaging, and voice under one per-agent price.
Take the sticker price with salt. Real-world costs frequently land at 2–3x the base rate once AI add-ons, the Explore analytics product, and other premium features are in the contract. A ten-agent team budgeting $550/month should plan for something closer to $1,100–$1,600, and should read the renewal terms before they sign, not after.
Channels
This is the cleanest split on the page. osTicket handles email, web forms, and phone-logged tickets — inbound requests that become a queue entry. That's the whole surface.
Zendesk covers email, live chat, phone, SMS, social messaging, and web forms in one platform. If your customers expect to reach you on WhatsApp or Instagram, osTicket has no answer and no roadmap that closes the gap. This alone disqualifies osTicket for most consumer-facing businesses in 2026.

Interface and agent experience

If you're between the two and can't staff either, that's a signal to shop the mid-market instead of forcing this choice.
